From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Robert Stephenson struck out 12 over six two-hit innings and the Bats won the series finale over Indy, 5-2. Tribe starter Mitch Keller struck out 10 but was tagged for five earned runs on six hits and four walks in his six innings pitched. Phillip Ervin clubbed a home run with one away in the first to put the visitors in front 1-0, and they added four more runs two innings later. Gabby Guerrero and D.J. Peterson cranked back-to-back pitches for RBI doubles to Victory Field's spacious left-center alley in that frame. The Indians scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh, benefitting from a missed call by the umpiring crew. Adam Frazier appeared to have lined out to Ervin on a sliding catch in left, but the crew ruled that the ball was trapped, allowing both Eric Wood and Jason Martin to score. Indy eventually brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the inning, but Jose Osuna grounded out to short to end the threat. The Tribe again had the tying run to the plate in the eighth but came up empty. Indy left 10 runners on base and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Louisville's pitching staff piled up 18 strikeouts to earn the two-game series split.

DUELING 10-K PERFORMANCES: Both starting pitchers last night, Louisville's Robert Stephenson and Indy's Mitch Keller, recorded 10-plus strikeouts. Stephenson's 12 strikeouts set a new career high while Keller's 10 fell one shy of matching his career high. The last occurrence where both Indy's starting pitcher and the opposing starter had 10 or more strikeouts in the same game was on April 9, 1988 in Nashville. Tribe right-handed starter John Dopson had 10 punchouts over 6.1 shutout innings, and Sounds southpaw Tim Birtsas had 11 in eight innings of one-run ball. Neither starter factored into the decision, however. The Tribe took a 2-1 lead with one run in the 11th before surrendering two in the bottom half to lose 3-2.

WORTHY OF A PROMOTION: Jordan Luplow was recalled by Pittsburgh today, his first promotion to the big leagues in 2018. He appeared in 27 games for the Buccos in 2017, batting .205 with three homers and 11 RBI. Luplow had been red-hot at the plate for Indy this year. Since May 1, he was batting .330 (70-for-212) with 31 extra-base hits, 41 RBI and 31 runs scored in 59 games. Since June 1, his average checked in at .348 (39-for-112). Over his last 20 games, he was hitting a robust .422 (29-for-67) with three dingers, five doubles, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and 13 walks against just nine strike-outs. His 144 wRC+ for the season ranked third among International League batting qualifiers. He was also tied for second in the league in doubles (22), fourth in RBI (47), fifth in extra-base hits (34) and eighth in batting (.297) at the time of his promotion. Defensively, his nine outfield assists -- including six at home plate -- ranked second in the International League.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Indians are 24-17 at The Vic and have won 10 of their last 14 games in the Circle City. Indy has hit .273 thru its first 41 home games this season. Since 2005, that .273 home average would rank third behind the 2005 squad (.282) and 2010 team (.275). The pitching staff also has a solid 3.30 ERA at home, still well behind last year's mark of 2.84.

BY THE NUMBERS - 18: Indy struck out a season-high 18 times last night in a 5-2 loss to the Bats, the second-highest mark by a Tribe team in the Victory Field era. Jose Osuna (4), Ryan Lavarnway (4), Sean Rodriguez (2), Eric Wood (2), Wyatt Mathisen (2) and Mitch Keller (2) all struck out multiple times. The Victory Field era record of 20 strikeouts by an Indy squad came on May 10, 2014 vs. Norfolk at The Vic.
