Buffalo, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the series opener to the Buffalo Bisons, 6-4, Friday night at Coca-Cola Field. The Chiefs rallied twice to cut down three run deficits, but eventually fell before a crowd of nearly 10,000 in downtown Buffalo despite outhitting the Herd 10-7. Raudy Read and Yadiel Hernandez each posted three hits in the loss.
Buffalo (39-41) began the scoring in the second inning. Danny Jansen and Reese McGuire each singled to start the inning against David Goforth. Three batters later, Gio Urshela doubled home both runners to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead.
Jansen plated two more in the third. After a two-out double by Dwight Smith, Jr., Jansen hit his seventh home run of the season to give the Herd a 4-0 lead.
Syracuse (36-50) posted three runs against Sean Reid-Foley to get back in the game in the fifth. Read and Hernandez each singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Moises Sierra followed with a line-drive single to left field to score Read and cut the lead to 4-1. Reid-Foley then hit Chris Dominguez with a pitch to load the bases. The ball got under the glove of Andrew Stevenson in center to allowed Fields to score and Urena to reach third on the error. Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Urena for an unearned run and 6-3 Bisons lead.
The Chiefs mounted another rally in the eighth. Jose Marmolejos doubled to start the inning against Tim Mayza. After Conor Fisk came into the game, Read singled to put runners on first and third, and then Hernandez hit an RBI single to left field to score Marmolejos and cut the lead to 6-4. Sierra then reached on an infield single to load the bases, but Fisk struck out two batters in a row to end the threat.
