Stripers' Carlos Franco Selected for 2018 Triple-A Home Run Derby
July 6, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The International League announced today that Gwinnett Stripers first baseman Carlos Franco is one of six participants confirmed for the 2018 Triple-A Home Run Derby on Monday, July 9 at homer-friendly Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio. The Derby will take place at the end of the Triple-A Skills Competition.
Franco, 26, is batting .248 (77-for-311) with 16 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 41 runs scored and 52 RBIs in 84 games during his second season with Gwinnett. He currently ranks among IL leaders in RBIs (2nd, 52) and home runs (T-4th, 11). He was selected by the International League office - along with teammates Kolby Allard and Evan Phillips - for the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 11.
The Atlanta Braves named Franco as Gwinnett's Player of the Month for April after he batted .250 (22-for-88) with five doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs in 22 games. A native of Bani, Dominican Republic, he combined to hit a team-high nine home runs between April and May.
Franco will be Gwinnett's first representative in the Home Run Derby since Ernesto Mejia belted four long balls in 2013's contest in Reno, Nevada. In 2011, Gwinnett's Stefan Gartrell took home the Derby crown over a field that included teammate Mauro Gomez.
Joining Franco from the International League will be Lehigh Valley's Joey Meneses (T-1st, 15 HR) and Toledo's Chad Huffman (7 HR). From the Pacific Coast League, Las Vegas' Zach Borenstein (T-2nd, 19 HR), Fresno's A.J. Reed (T-2nd, 19 HR) and Memphis' Patrick Wisdom (12 HR) will look to take the title.
The 2018 Triple-A All-Star Skills Competition and Home Run Derby will be available for free live streaming at MiLB.com on Monday, July 9 beginning at 6:30 p.m. EDT. On Wednesday, July 11, watch Franco take the field for the Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan, at 7 p.m. on MiLB.TV.
