Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Gwinnett Stripers throttled the Charlotte Knights 12-0 at Coolray Field Friday behind a seven-run sixth inning and 7.0 scoreless innings from right-hander Wes Parsons.

The Stripers dominated from the start as they recorded their most runs in a game and their largest winning margin this season.

In the first inning, Dustin Peterson got the scoring going with an opposite-field solo home run (7) to right to make it 1-0 against righty Carson Fulmer. Gwinnett got runs in the third and fifth via RBI singles by Phil Gosselin and Rio Ruiz, respectively, for a 3-0 lead.

It was the sixth-inning onslaught that blew the game wide open. The first five Stripers to bat reached base in the inning, with Xavier Avery tallying an RBI double and Rob Brantly adding an RBI single. Fulmer was pulled after Avery's double to make way for Ricardo Pinto, who allowed Brantly's single and back-to-back RBI groundouts to Ruiz and Peterson to make it 7-0. After Carlos Franco walked, Preston Tucker drove an RBI double into the right field corner and put both runners in scoring position. Sean Kazmar Jr. followed with a two-run single, his second hit of the inning, making it 10-0 Gwinnett.

In total, the Stripers brought 12 batters to the plate and notched seven hits in the sixth, matching a season high with seven runs in the inning.

Franco, who earlier Friday was named to the 2018 Triple-A Home Run Derby, hit a two-run blast (12) off Jake Elmore in the eighth to extend the lead to 12-0.

Fulmer (L, 3-5) piled up 10 hits, five earned runs and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Pinto, who didn't make it out of the sixth, went 0.2 innings allowing five hits, five earned runs and two walks. Aaron Bummer cleaned up the mess and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.

Meanwhile, Parsons (W, 4-2) cruised through Charlotte's lineup. He fanned six while allowing just five hits and two walks over 7.0 innings in his second scoreless outing with Gwinnett this season (June 22 vs. Columbus).

Michael Mader threw 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to end the game for Gwinnett.

Every Gwinnett batter notched at least one hit as the Stripers produced 17 hits, and all but Sal Giardina picked up at least one RBI. Tucker led the charge, going 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Ruiz, Peterson, Kazmar, Avery and Brantly each had two hits. In the process, Ruiz extended his team-best hitting streak to 11 games.

Jacob May and Casey Gillaspie each had two hits for Charlotte (39-48).

The Stripers (37-50) look to continue the hit parade Saturday in game two of the series at 6:05 p.m. 2018 Triple-A All-Star left-hander Kolby Allard (5-3, 2.93 ERA) is scheduled for Gwinnett against Charlotte righty Spencer Adams (0-2, 3.76 ERA). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and 93.5 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 5:35 p.m.
