IL1 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

SWB Game Notes

August 11, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A wild Monday night at PNC Field finished in exhilarating fashion as the RailRiders earned a 2-1 win over the PawSox on Ben Gamel's walk-off, inside-the-park home run to right. SWB stands 13 games above .500 for the first time since the then-SWB Yankees won the division in 2013 at 84-60.

GAMEL HAD A SECRETARY NAMED REFSNYDER: Gamel's inside-the-park home run was his eighth homer of the season, tying him with Rob Refsnyder for second on the team with eight in an SWB uniform. Refsnyder, who was the on-deck hitter last night during Gamel's game-winning plate appearance, delivered the team's prior inside-the-parker at Lehigh Valley on June 28, 2014. The 2014 RailRiders had two walk-off homers: Refsnyder on July 4 off of Buffalo's Steve Delabar and Adonis Garcia on July 10 against Rochester's A.J. Achter.

LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Gamel went 2-for-5 with a double and his homer. He leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel has posted multiple hits in 10 of his last 16 games, hitting .413/.465/.76/1.227 in that time. He has lifted his overall contact clip to .300, good for sixth in the IL. He ranks among the IL's best in hits (T-2nd, 122), runs scored (T-3rd, 64), slugging (4th, .473) and total bases (3rd, 192).

WHO OWN DA PAW SOX?: The RailRiders have more wins against Pawtucket (10-3) than any other team this season, including a 5-0 mark in the Ocean State. They have taken 15 of the last 18 meetings going back to last season including each of the last five. The PawSox have lost eight in a row overall.

QUALITY EFFORT: Starter Kyle Davies settled for a no-decision but logged his seventh quality start over his last nine. In that time he is 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA, .204 BAA and 1.04 WHIP. Last night, he allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk over seven innings while whiffing a season-best eight. He leads SWB in wins (8), but also shares the lead in losses (6). Part of the reason has been run support. He gets just 3.7 runs/start including nine runs in his six setbacks (1.5/loss).

CLOSE CALLS: Half of the RailRiders' last 20 games have been decided by one run and 14 have come down to two runs or less. SWB has gone 14-6 over its last 20 and owns the IL's best record in single-score games at 22-14 (.611).

FLYING HIGH: Greg Bird went 2-for-4 on the day he was named IL Batter of the Week (Aug. 3-9) after hitting .348 while pacing the circuit in RBIs (10) and slugging (.783). Bird has hits in 10 of his last 11 games, slashing .386/.396/.705/1.100 in that time to lift his Triple-A batting average to .302.

HOW GARY GOT HIS GROOVE BACK: Gary Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. After starting his Triple-A time 2-for-11 (.182/.286/.455/.740), he has gone 24-for-62 (.387/.451/.629/1.080). He enters tonight as a .356 hitter at Triple-A with 20 RBIs in 21 games played. Including his Double-A numbers, he co-leads the Yankees' farm in home runs with Aaron Judge at 16.

UNDER MY PIRELA: Jose Pirela went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Since the All-Star break, he has hit .398/.455/.511/.967 while lifting his batting average to .348. If he had enough plate appearances to qualify (min. 2.7/team game), he would trail only Buffalo's Matt Hague (.349) in the batting title chase.

TOUGH TIMES: In eight games played on his latest SWB tenure, Slade Heathcott has gone 2-for-30 (.067) with three walks and 14 strikeouts. Kyle Roller went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The IL All-Star has gone 5-for-51 (.098) since the break with 21 strikeouts, lowering his average to a season-worst .220. Gregorio Petit enters tonight in a 1-for-17 (.059) slide with five strikeouts, lowering his average to a season-worst .239. He hit .297 with 19 doubles and 10 homers as a PCL All-Star for Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2014.

LIGHTS OUT: Stadium lights on the left side of PNC Field went out with the bases empty, two outs and Jemile Weeks at the plate in the seventh. It resulted in an 18-minute delay before Davies resumed the plate appearance by issuing ball four on a payoff pitch for his lone walk. It made for the second time in the modern PNC Field's three-year run that a game was delayed by the darkening of stadium lights. On July 10, 2013, with a rehabbing Derek Jeter in the lineup, the lights went out for a 21-minute delay that The Captain filled by signing autographs.
