Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Chicago White Sox infielder Emilio Bonifacio, who was placed on the team's 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain on July 29, will begin a major league rehab assignment with the Charlotte Knights at BB&T Ballpark starting tonight. Bonifacio, 30, was signed by the White Sox as a free agent on January 8, 2015. In one other roster move, infielder Cleuluis Rondon was assigned back to Winston-Salem (A+) today. Charlotte's roster is now set at 24 active players.
A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Bonifacio is hitting .169 (13-for-77) with five runs scored, two doubles, and four RBIs in 45 games with Chicago this season. Originally signed as a free agent by the Arizona Diamondbacks on December 27, 2001, Bonifacio is a career .259 hitter over parts of nine seasons at the major league level. The 30-year-old compiled a career-high .296 batting average in 2011 as a member of the Florida Marlins. During that season, Bonifacio recorded a 26-game hitting streak from June 28-July 27, 2011 -- earning National League Player of the Month honors for the month of July.
Rondon, 21, was promoted to Charlotte from Winston-Salem (A+) on August 8 and appeared in two games with the Knights (0-for-6). The Maracay, Venezuelan native was originally obtained by the Chicago White Sox on July 30, 2013 along with Avisail Garcia and pitchers Frankie Montas and J.B. Wendelken, in exchange for RHP Jake Peavy. Rondon entered the 2015 season ranked by Baseball America as the Best Defensive Infielder in the White Sox organization. The same publication also tabbed him as possessing the Best Infield Arm in the organization.
The Charlotte Knights and Gwinnett Braves will continue their four-game series from BB&T Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. tonight. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and two-time National League Most Valuable Player Dale Murphy will meet fans and sign autographs, presented by Carolinas Tire Pros. Tonight is also Twitter Tuesday, courtesy of BB&T. Fans can win prizes throughout the night by following the Knights on Twitter @KnightsBaseball.
