Mud Hens Drop Pitchers' Duel in Extra Innings

August 11, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

In their first game of a three game road trip in Indianapolis, the Mud Hens fought their way into extra innings, but weren't able to gut out a victory. It was a pitchers' duel in Indy, but Toledo dropped the contest 4-3. With the loss, the Mud Hens' record fell to 47-69, and they now sit 21 and a half games back in the International League West division.

Toledo went up against one of the Pittsburgh Pirates' top pitching prospects in Tyler Glasnow, and was able to battle for one run while he was on the mound for six innings. Daniel Fields got the party started for the Hens with a one out single in the third inning. With Dixon Machado batting, Fields stole second to get into scoring position. Machado then delivered with a line drive single pulled into left field to score Fields and give Toledo a 1-0 lead.

Luis Cessa pitched a breakout game for the Mud Hens Tuesday night. After being roughed up in his first start in Toledo, he responded in a big way on the road in Indianapolis. Cessa came out in the first and fired a one-two-three inning, finishing the three hitter Jordy Mercer off with a strikeout. In the third inning, he gave up a run on an RBI sacrifice fly from Gorkys Hernandez. Cessa went into shutout mode for the next three innings, striking out four in six innings.

The game got interesting in the seventh inning. In the top half, Jeff McVaney hit a one out double, and then scored on a single off the bat of Alexi Casilla. With his second hit of the day, Fields drove in Casilla to give Toledo a 3-1 lead. Indianapolis wouldn't go quietly in the bottom half, though. Cessa started the seventh, and hit the first batter of the inning, and then walked the second. With one out and runners on second and third, Josh Bell singled to center field, which scored both base runners to tie the game and end Cessa's night.

Drew VerHagen came on and locked down the rest of the seventh inning, and then pitched a scoreless eighth. Josh Zeid came on in the ninth to mow down the Indians' batters, and the Mud Hens went to extra innings tied 3-3. In extras, Zeid pitched a scoreless tenth to give the Toledo offense a chance in the eleventh, but they couldn't capitalize. Indianapolis walked it off in the bottom of the eleventh with an RBI double from Bell off of Angel Nesbitt to win 4-3.

Toledo takes the field on Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis at 1:35 p.m.
