The Syracuse Chiefs won their eighth straight game with a 4-1 win against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs used a four-run second inning to power past the IronPigs.
Syracuse (51-67) scored first in the bottom of the second inning against Lehigh Valley starter Sean O'Sullivan. Kevin Keyes led off the frame with a double into the right-center-field gap. Matt Skole followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners with no outs. Then, Matt den Dekker lined a triple over the center fielder, Aaron Altherr, to plate two and give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Steve Lerud reached base on a hit-by-pitch to put runners on the corners for Syracuse for the second time in the inning. With two outs, Emmanuel Burriss tripled down the right-field line to double the Syracuse lead to 4-0.
Lehigh Valley (53-64) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning against Scott McGregor, who came in in relief of Taylor Jordan in the top of the third. Altherr began the inning with a double to right field. Then, with Altherr on third, Tyler Pastornicky doubled to right to plate Altherr for the lone Lehigh Valley run in the game.
Rafael Martin notched his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning against the IronPigs. The right-hander allowed two hits with two outs but struck out Tyler Henson to end the game. The strikeout was the 59th strikeout for Martin in 49 innings in Triple-A this season.
The Chiefs and IronPigs continue a three-game series Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Syracuse sends Paolo Espino to the mound against left-hander Anthony Vasquez. The game is set to start at 7:05 p.m.
