Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: On a night when former Red Barons manager Marc Bombard was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame, the RailRiders defeated the Rochester Red Wings, 5-1.
SUPERNOVA: Ivan Nova (1-0) tossed six efficient innings of one-run ball on 73 pitches (50 strikes). In his second rehab outing as he mends from Tommy John surgery, Nova struck out three and walked one. Four of the five hits he allowed were singles, with a home run by Reynaldo Rodriguez proving to be the exception.
OH DANNY BOY: Danny Burawa struck out each of the first four men he faced last night. It marked a new season-high strikeout total for the hard-throwing right-hander who has allowed just 20 hits in 33 innings for a .175 BAA.
IN HIS WEBB: Tyler Webb stranded another inherited runner. Only three of his 18 hand-me-down men have come across the plate all year. His teammates have seen 28 of their 64 inherited men score. The southpaw posted his sixth hold.
E-ROD: Eddy Rodriguez went 1-for-3 to extend his season-best hitting streak to six games. Before this spurt, he had hit in only six of his first 14 games, going 6-for-42 (.143) in that time. He has gone 6-for-21 (.286) during his string of swinging success. Last night, he also nabbed two would-be base stealers in as many tries. He cut down both Danny Santana and Jose Martinez in their attempts to steal second base in the third and fifth inning respectively. Entering last night, the RailRiders had only caught two men in 24 attempts (.083) on the season when Rodriguez served as the catcher. With one earned run allowed, the team's ERA dipped to 2.22 when Rodriguez catches.
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Cole Figueroa went 2-for-4 last night. Since his 0-for-3 day dropped his average to .184 on May 11 at Norfolk, he has gone 41-for-104 in a span of 27 games played. He has led the league with all four slashes over that time: .394/.442/.567/1.010.
HIGH NOONAN: Nick Noonan posted a pair of hits and a walk on Friday. He has dominated in the month of June, going 17-for-38 (.447/.500/.632/1.132) with five extra-base hits and eight RBIs in 10 games played. His June average, OBP and OPS lead the IL while his SLG ranks 3rd.
#WINNING: The RailRiders have won six straight and 11 of 12. They stand a season-best 10 games above .500. The SWB franchise has not stood that tall since the 2012 IL North champion SWB Yankees finished the year at 84-60.
WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE: The RailRiders stand two games below .500 at PNC Field (17-19) and 12 games over on the road (20-8). The team has hit .282 on the road compared to a .261 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 144 runs in 28 games (5.1/game). At home, the squad has plated 138 runs in 36 games (3.8/game). The pitching has performed better on the road (3.26 ERA) than in Moosic (3.29 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.714), who have won 13 of 14 away from PNC Field.
TURN THE BEAT AROUND: Despite the season-long numbers, the RailRiders have trended better at home of late. They have won a season-best five straight games at PNC Field. That had not happened since the 2014 squad won five in a row in Moosic from May 5-9. SWB's last home winning streak of six or more came in 2013 when the RailRiders' era record was set at seven with wins from June 23-July 9. The streak stalled when Rochester avoided a three-game sweep by besting the RailRiders 5-1 on July 10, 2013 at PNC Field.
