Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk got a strong outing from the pitching staff but couldn't push across a run against three IronPigs hurlers in a 2-0 loss to Lehigh Valley Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Working on three day's rest, Norfolk starter Eddie Gamboa (4-4) turned in a strong effort in a spot start but was saddled with the tough-luck loss. Gamboa yielded just two hits over five innings - one of which was a solo homer by Brian Bogusevic in the first frame - while walking two and striking out a pair. The knuckleballer now owns a 3.45 ERA through 12 outings this season, 5th-best among Orioles minor leaguers this season.
The Tides registered eight hits and drew five walks against the trio of Phillippe Aumont (3-4), Jason Berken and Jake Diekman, but Norfolk went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base as the IronPigs salvaged a split of the four-game series.
Derrik Gibson had two singles and a stolen base to lead the offense, while Henry Urrutia singled and walked twice. Gibson, who is batting .361, has now hit safely in nine of eleven games with an at-bat since being promoted to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie.
With the loss, Norfolk (35-28) dropped to 6-6 in June. The Tides have alternated wins and losses over each of its 12 games this month.
Norfolk continues the homestand Monday as the Columbus Clippers come to Harbor Park for the start of a three-game set. Elih Villanueva (1-1, 5.94) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against right-hander Jordan Cooper (2-2, 4.09), with first pitch set for 7:05.
Monday is Turn Back the Clock Night at Harbor Park, as hot dogs, popcorn and sodas will be available for 50 cents each, courtesy of Smithfield Foods. The Tides will also wear throwback Norfolk Tars jerseys, emulating the uniforms worn by Norfolk when they played in the Piedmont League from 1906 to 1955.
Notes: Prior to Sunday's game, Baltimore recalled right-hander Tyler Wilson from Norfolk and optioned left-hander T.J. McFarland to the Tides...Chris Parmelee went 0-for-5 to snap his hitting streak at nine games...Norfolk went 2-for-36 with runners in scoring position over the final three games of the series...Dariel Alvarez went 0-for-3 with a walk, snapping a run of five consecutive multi-hit games...Dane De La Rosa threw two shutout innings of relief and has allowed just one hit in 20 at-bats (.050 average) in four relief appearances since joining Norfolk on June 5.
