Wichita Wind Surge News Release
Wichita, KS - The Wind Surge offense struggled to get runs across the plate tonight, as they drop the third installment of the six-game series with the Springfield Cardinals, 6-2.
After only four hits last night, the Cardinals matched that total in the first inning tonight. Chris Vallimont would allow four hits and two runs in the first inning. However, he would power through and hit a groove in the early innings. He would finish the night with four and a third innings pitched, allowing seven hits, three runs, one walk, and seven strikeouts.
Showing some patience at the plate, in the third inning the Surge drew a pair of walks, loading the bases for Peter Mooney's RBI single, which tied the game at two. Another pair of fifth inning RBI singles would put the Cardinals ahead 4-2.
The Wind Surge would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth with no outs, before Springfield pitchers dished out three straight strikeouts to end the prospective rally. Despite only scoring two runs, Wichita still managed 9 hits off Cardinal pitchers. Surge hitters would go 1-11 with runners in scoring position, stranding twelve men on base. Gilberto Celestino continued his impressive homestand, going 3-5 with a double, two singles, and a fielder's choice.
Alex Phillips would come on in relief, initially tossing two scoreless, however a seventh inning Cardinals homer would extend their lead to 6-2. Jovani Moran would come in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, throwing a scoreless and hitless two innings, with three strikeouts.
COMING UP: Wichita and Springfield will play the fourth game of the series on Friday night, with the first pitch at 7:05pm. Wichita will start RHP Austin Schulfer (1-1) against Springfield's RHP Dalton Roach (0-2). RADIO/TV: KGSO 1410 AM and 93.9 FM, MiLB-TV and Windsurge.com
