Hagerstown, MD - Solid starting pitching and a three-run third inning gave the Hagerstown Suns (10-11) all they needed in a 3-2 victory over the Greenville Drive (12-10) in Friday night's series opener at Municipal Stadium.

Phillips Valdez (2-1) kept the Drive off the board in his six innings of work and gave up just two hits while striking out four and not issuing a walk.

The Suns struck for all three of their runs in the bottom of the third and knocked Drive starter Michael Kopech (1-2) out of the game. A Greenville error brought home the first run, and sacrifice flies by Jose Marmolejos-Diaz and Jeff Gardner tacked on two more runs.

In the top of the seventh, the Drive rudely greeted new Suns pitcher R.C. Orlan to the game, as Ben Moore singled and moved to third on Francisco Tellez's double, and Carlos Mesa followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Orlan settled down from there and didn't allow another run to earn his third save of the year.

Moore was the lone Drive player with two hits. Dale Carey and Matt Reistetter had three hits apiece for Hagerstown.

Greenville reliever Carlos Pinales and Kuehl McEachern combined for five and two-third scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.

Game two of the four-game set begins at 7:05 PM on Saturday night. LH Dedgar Jimenez, just added to the Drive roster on Friday, will make his first start of the season, while the Suns will counter with RH Jefry Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
