Hickory Crawdads News Release

Charleston, SC - The Hickory Crawdads offense tried to make up for eight shutout innings with a late rally in the 9th Friday night, but after scoring two runs the 'Dads left the tying run at second base in a 3-2 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.

The 'Dads and 'Dogs entered the series as the top two teams in the South Atlantic League, with Hickory leading the Northern Division at 15-5 while Charleston paced the Southern Division with a 13-8 record. The two standout squads looked every bit the well-matched rivals, with both pitching staffs making offense difficult for most of the night.

The RiverDogs were able to scrape across three runs against the Crawdads pitching duo of Reed Garrett and Adam Parks, while the 'Dads bats were shutout over the first eight frames against 'Dogs hurlers Joey Maher, Yoel Espinal, and Caleb Frare. The game looked like it would end quickly and quietly for the visiting squad, as Charleston closer Cale Coshow promptly retired the first two batters he faced. The 'Dads then began a two out rally, with Jose Cardona, Michael De Leon, Travis Demeritte, and Ronald Guzman all coming through with two-out singles to score two runs and bring slugger Luke Tendler to the plate with the tying and go-ahead tallies on base. The rally would end there for the Crawdads however, as Coshow settled down and struck out Tendler to end the game with a 3-2 Hickory defeat.

Maher (1-0) earned the win for Charleston after tossing 5.1 shutout innings on three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts, while Coshow (6) improved to a perfect 6/6 in save opportunities this year. Garrett (1-2) ended the night as the hard luck loser for the Crawdads, as right-hander allowed only two runs on four hits, two walks, and 6 Ks over his six innings pitched.

Demeritte led the 'Dads offensive attack finishing 3-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Guzman also ended the night with a multi-hit game going 2-5 with an RBI. De Leon reached base safely three times with a 1-2 game including two walks, a run scored, and a stolen base. The 'Dads offense as a whole tied a 9-inning season high with 11 runners left on base, eight of them in scoring position.

The Crawdads (15-6) will look to bounce back in game two of their series against the RiverDogs (14-8) with first pitch Saturday night scheduled for 6:05 pm.
