Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: On the first day of May the Augusta GreenJackets (11-11, 9-9) hosted game one of a four game series against the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds (Baltimore Orioles) (12-9, 10-7). RHP Nathanael Santiago (1-0, ERA 3.00) and LHP Bennett Parry (1-1, ERA 3.05) were the starting pitchers for each respected club. Friday's back-and-forth game went in favor of the GreenJackets with a score of five to four.

Delmarva Shorebirds lead off man Jay Gonzalez quickly quieted an eager GreenJackets crowd with a lead off double to begin Friday night's contest. After a wild pitch by Nathanael Santiago that allowed Gonzalez to reach third base, Steve Wilkerson hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the game's first run.

It was not until the bottom of the fourth inning that the GreenJackets managed to squeeze out their first hit of the game. Johneshwy Fargas led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Shorebirds pitcher Bennette Parry. GreenJackets second baseman Travirous Relaford hit Fargas in on a game tying RBI single. Relaford has now recorded RBIs in back to back nights. With one out and Relaford on second base after a Seth Harrison bunt single, Andrew Cain knocked in Relaford with for an RBI single of his own. Thus, giving the GreenJackets a lead of two to one.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the GreenJackets struck again. A wild pitch helped Travirous Relaford cross home plate to score for his second time of the game. Then a RBI double off the hot bat of catcher Aramis Garcia allowed the GreenJackets to jump out to a four to one lead at the end of the sixth inning.

The Shorebirds while being down to one out in the top of the seventh inning struck three times to tie the game at four a piece. A questionable call in the bottom of the seventh inning by the field umpire allowed the Shorebirds to tie the game at four all. GreenJackets first year manager Nestor Rojas came out to the field to argued the call but had no luck with either umpire. Dusten Knight ended the bleeding in the top of the seventh inning by striking out Shorebirds third baseman Jomar Reyes.

Johneshwy Fargas was able put his self in scoring position for the GreenJackest but Fargas's effort to take the lead was squashed by Shorebirds pitcher Dariel Delgado. Delgado was able to strike out Travirous Relaford and force Seth Harrison to pop out to first base to end the seventh inning. Dusten Knight quickly retired the side in the top of the eighth inning and gave the GreenJackets batters momentum heading into the bottom half of the eighth inning. Jonah Arenado led of with a walk and a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Andrew Cain moved Arenado into scoring position. Designated hitter John Riley made the most of the scoring opportunity by hitting in Arenado for his fifth RBI of the season and the go ahead run.

In the bottom of the ninth inning manager Rojas went to RHP Raymundo Montero for the save opportunity. After giving up two singles to Jay Gonzalez and Steve Wilkerson, Montero was able to force Conor Biefeldt to ground out to a game ending six-four-three double play. Dusten Knight will take home first win of 2015 season, Zeke McGranahan will receive his second loss, and Montero collects his fourth save.
