
Greensboro Takes Early Lead, Hangs on to Top Power

(Greensboro, NC- May 1, 2015)- The West Virginia Power lost 3-2 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Friday night at NewBridge Bank Park. The Hoppers scored all three of their runs over the first two innings to take the series opener
Greensboro jumped on West Virginia starter Austin Coley in the first inning. The Grasshoppers scored twice on four hits, including run-scoring singles by K.J. Woods and Austen Smith. Greensboro added a run on two hits in the second to extend the lead.
Grasshoppers starting pitcher Michael Mader threw five scoreless innings, allowing five hits. In the sixth against reliever Tyler Kane, the Power broke up the shutout on a sacrifice fly from Chase Simpson to bring in Tito Polo. In the top of the eighth, Polo singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out and scored on a ground out by Kawika Emsley-Pai to cut the deficit down to one.
West Virginia put the tying run on the bases in the ninth, but could not even the score. The Power left a season-high 11 men on base in the loss.
Coley (3-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits, all singles. The right-hander also struck out a career high eight batters. Mader (2-2) earned the win and Luis Castillo worked the ninth for his second save.
West Virginia and Greensboro continue this series on Saturday at NewBridge Bank Park. Jose Regalado will start for the Power against the Grasshoppers Jose Adames. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. West Virginia will return to Appalachian Power Park on May 6 to begin a seven game homestand against the Kannapolis Intimidators and the Charleston RiverDogs.
