Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds dropped a tight contest in Friday night's series opener to the Augusta GreenJackets. A go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning lifted Augusta past the Shorebirds for a 5-4 final score.
Two batters into the game, Delmarva jumped in front to start a back-and-forth night. Jay Gonzalez led off with a double down the left field line. After a wild pitch, Steve Wilkerson skied a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
Shorebirds' starter Bennett Parry began with three perfect innings before slipping in the fourth. Augusta strung together four singles, including two bunts, for two runs and a 2-1 lead.
Augusta extended their lead with two more runs in the sixth inning, both charged to Parry's ledger. Travious Relaford scored on a wild pitch, and Aramis Garcia delivered an RBI double.
Delmarva immediately responded with a rally to tie the game in the seventh. Gonzalez flared an RBI single to left, part of a three-hit night for the centerfielder. With the bases loaded, Conor Bierfeldt beat out a chopper towards third, scoring two runs for a 4-4 tie.
The GreenJackets scored the decisive blow in the eighth inning. Zeke McGranahan issued a leadoff walk to Jonah Arenado to put the go-ahead run aboard. After a sacrifice bunt and strikeout, the Shorebirds' reliever was close to preserving the tie. With two strikes, John Riley punched a two-out RBI single to put Augusta in front for good.
Coming off a ninth inning rally on Thursday, Delmarva threatened again in their final chance. Gonzalez and Wilkerson both singled to put the tying run in scoring position, but a double play ended the night.
Dusten Knight (1-1) earned a win for Augusta, while Raymundo Montero picked up his fourth save. McGranahan suffered the loss, allowing his first earned run of the season.
The Shorebirds will try to even the score in game two on Saturday evening. Left-hander Brian Gonzalez (1-0, 2.70) gets the ball for Delmarva against right-hander Sam Coonrod (0-1, 4.61) for Augusta. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
