JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (20-21, 57-54) lost 11-1 to the Chattanooga Lookouts (23-17, 58-52) at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Friday night.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Suns, and Jacksonville has dropped its last five games against Chattanooga.
Making his Southern League and Los Angeles Dodgers organization debut, newly acquired right-hander Stephen Fife (1-0) earned the win for Chattanooga after five strong innings allowing a run on five hits. Chattanooga's Ethan Martin pitched the final four innings in scoreless fashion, earning his second save of the year.
Suns starter Joey O'Gara (6-7) took the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits in only two innings, his shortest start of the year. After scoring two runs off O'Gara in the first, Chattanooga made it a 5-0 score in the third on a three-run homer by Kyle Russell. The Lookouts added a run on a sacrifice fly by Ivan Ochoa, giving Chattanooga a 6-0 advantage moving into the bottom of the third.
Jacksonville scored its only run in the third, with Paul Gran scoring Suns pitcher Jeff Allison on a sacrifice fly.
Russell hit his second RBI triple of the game in the top of the fourth, putting the Lookouts back ahead by six at 7-1. Russell finished the game 3-4 with the home run, two triples, and five runs batted in. Allison pitched three innings for the Suns in relief, allowing only the one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and a perfect fifth.
Ramon Benjamin took over on the mound in the sixth, and threw two scoreless innings before Alfredo Silverio hit a two-run homer off him in the top of the eighth to give Chattanooga a 9-1 lead. The Lookouts added two runs in the ninth off Suns reliever Kris Harvey to put the final score at 11-1.
The Suns were limited to one run on three hits, and the loss is the only the second time this season Jacksonville has lost by ten runs.
The Suns and Lookouts will play game two of the five game series on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds. Saturday night will feature a Mike Stanton Bobblehead Doll Giveway, with the first 3,000 fans receiving a bobblehead doll of former Suns and current Marlins slugger Mike Stanton, courtesy of Jiffy Lube.
Left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarez (1-3, 5.64 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville while right-hander Will Savage (11-3, 3.51 ERA) will pitch for Chattanooga. Saturday's game will start at 7:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
