Smokies Announce Series Of Roster Moves Friday

KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Double-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce this afternoon that RHP Larry Suarez has been added to the team's active roster in advance of the team's series opener against the Huntsville Stars. In corresponding roster move, RHP Marcus Hatley has been placed on the disabled list. OF Matt Spencer has been promoted to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.

The Smokies roster now sits at 23 active players.

Suarez, 21, comes to Tennessee for the first time in his career. He started the 2011 campaign with the Low-A Peoria Chiefs then was promoted to the High-A Daytona Cubs on July 4. While in Daytona, Suarez held a 1-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in eight relief appearances. The Valencia, Venezuela native was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2006.

Hatley was 1-0 with two saves and a 3.78 ERA in 12 appearances with Tennessee. He as the Cubs' 39th round draft pick in 2006.

Spencer is promoted to Triple-A for the first time in his career. This season with the Smokies, the Morristown, Tenn. native held a .258 (83-for-322) batting average with 21 doubles, 13 home runs and 63 RBI.
