TODAY'S GAME: The Generals and Birmingham Barons meet for the first time this season at Regions Park. The two teams will meet for the 10th time this season, with the first nine games being played in Jackson, at Pringles Park. Jackson is 6-3 against the Barons, who were the first half champions in the Southern League's South Division.
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - The Jackson Generals won 5-3 for the second straight night over the M-Braves Thursday and take the five-game series at Pringles Park, three games to two. The series win is the first for the Jackson club since taking three of five from the Tennessee Smokies, June 4-8 at Smokies Park. The span was 10-straight series and included two series splits. Andrew Carraway (8-3) logged the second straight quality start by a Generals starting pitcher and worked 6.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits. Carraway matched a season high with six strikeouts. He is also the first Generals pitcher to eight victories this season. Stephen Pryor struck out four during two relief innings, including the side in the eighth inning to earn his first save. Jose Lugo (0-3) surrendered five runs on 11 hits over seven innings and took the loss Thursday. Carlos Triunfel extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games with another multi-hit performance. Carlos was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Scott Savastano followed his four-hit night last night with a 2-for-5 outing with an RBI. Brandon Haveman was the third Generals with two hits going 2-for-4.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Francisco Martinez has a hit in all four games for Jackson and is batting .294 (5x17) with 3 runs and 3 RBI. Carlos Triunfel currently has a 10-game hit streak, batting .415 (17x41) with 5 runs scored, 1 home run and 5 RBI. He has also hit safely in 18 of his last 20 games, batting .375 (30x80) with 8 runs scored, 1 home run and 6 RBI. Vinnie Catricala has recorded multi-hits in 9 of his last 13 games, batting .426 (23x54) with 9 runs scored, 8 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 RBI. Scott Savastano has recorded multi-hits in 8 of his last 14 games, batting .381 (24x63) with 6 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 home run, and 9 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Kenn Kasparek makes his first Generals start tonight since May 11th in the opener of the 5-game series. Kasparek made 3 rehab starts with the AZL Mariners (0-0, 5.00) and 2 starts for High Desert (0-1, 4.63). Kasparek was placed on the DL with soreness in his left elbow on May 13th. Kasparek was named a 2011 Southern League All-Star.
SAVO THRIVING IN LEADOFF ROLE: In 9 games serving as the leadoff hitter for the Generals Scott Savastano is batting .475 (19x40), with 6 doubles and 6 RBI. His on-base average is .500 and OPS is 1.125.
GENERALS LED LEAGUE IN BATTING DURING JULY: The Generals closed the month of July with the top batting average in the league during the month at .281. Five Generals batted .300 or better in the month. In 27 games Vinnie Catricala hit .364, with 18 extra-base hits and 24 RBI; in 28 games Carlos Triunfel hit .306; in 23 games Scott Savastano batted .321 with 10 double; in 20 games James McOwen hit .300; and Rich Poythress hit .316 10 extra-base hits and 16 RBI.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1921 - Radio station KDKA and announcer Harold Arlin provided the first broadcast of a major league game. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Phillies, 8-5, in Philadelphia. 1969 - Willie Stargell is the first to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium.
