
Barons Big First Inning Sends Jackson To Loss

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham Barons scored five runs in the first inning and rolled Friday in the series opener at Regions Park, over the Generals, 7-1. The loss snapped a short two-game win streak for Jackson. The Generals lead the season series 6-4. The game was halted at the beginning of play by a 38 minute rain delay.
Carlos Triunfel saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end Friday after finishing 0-for-3 with a walk. The hitting streak was the third-longest by a Generals player this season. Brandon Haveman was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Chih Hsien Chiang finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Christian Marrero paced the Barons with a 2-for-3 game including a homer and three RBI's.
Jackson starter Kenn Kasparek (4-3) made his first Generals start since May 11th and surrendered five runs on five hits in the first inning, but settled to allow just two runs on five hits in his final four innings. Kasparek took the loss, striking out three and walking one over five frames. Daniel Cooper made his Double-A debut for the Generals a pitched two scoreless relief innings. Charlie Shirek (3-5) pitched seven scoreless innings for the Barons to pick up the win, striking out three and walking none.
Birmingham jumped out to a 5-0 lead and sent nine hitters to the plate in the bottom of the first. Christian Marrero capped off the inning and blasted a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right. Jackson starter Kasparek threw 39 pitches during the first frame.
Marrero struck again in the bottom of the fourth and drove in Ross Wilson with an RBI single to right, then in the fifth Luis Sierra plated Seth Loman with a single to put Birmingham up 7-0.
Jackson finally touched the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning and scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Chiang that scored Brandon Haveman.
The Generals continue their five-game series on Saturday night at Regions Park in Birmingham, AL against the Birmingham Barons. Game time is set for 6:30 pm. LHP James Paxton (1-0, 2.49) makes the start for the Generals against LHP Hector Santiago (4-3, 4.96) for Birmingham.
