
Generals Surrender to Barons, 7-1

Hoover, AL - Charlie Shirek yielded five hits and three strikeouts in 7.0 scoreless IP as the Jackson Generals (17-24, 55-56) surrendered to the Birmingham Barons (16-24, 56-55), 7-1, in front of 3,484 fans Friday night at Regions Park. The game was delayed 38 minutes due to inclement weather.
The Barons took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Alden Carrithers singled to right field, continued to third on a two-base throwing error by Jesus Sucre and rushed home on Brandon Short's RBI single to left field. Christian Marrero followed with a two-run home run that scored Short. A RBI single to right field by Jon Gilmore was followed with a double by Jose Martinez to left field. With runners in scoring position, Seth Loman reached on a fielding error by General's first baseman, Luis Jiminez, which drove home Gilmore and Martinez, 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ross Wilson reached on a bunt single and sprinted to second on Short's single to right field. A RBI single by Marrero plated Wilson and increased the Barons advantage to six, 6-0.
Birmingham added one run in the bottom of the fifth after Loman drew a walk and advanced to second on Jake Oester's groundout. Luis Sierra followed with a RBI single that knocked home Loman, 7-0.
The Generals tallied one run in the top of the eighth when Brandon Haveman doubled to right field, continued to third on a wild pitch and dashed home on a sacrifice fly by Chih-Hslen Chiang, 7-1
Shirek (3-5) earned the victory for the Barons with five hits and three strikeouts in 7.0 scoreless IP.
Kenn Kasparnick (4-3) received the loss for the Generals after he hurled 5.0 IP with seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
The Barons and Generals battle game two of the five-game series with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday night at Regions Park. Birmingham sends left-hander Hector Santiago (4-3, 4.96) to the mound and Jackson counters with left-handed pitcher James Paxton (1-0, 2.49).
