Strikeouts Plague Curve in Series Finale with Rock Cats

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - New Britain's Taylor Rogers struck out a career-high 11 batters and the Curve whiffed 12 times overall in a, 3-1, road trip-closing loss to the Rock Cats Wednesday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. Drew Maggi drove home the game's only run for the Curve with his RBI single in the third.

Rogers (7-4) and the Rock Cats scored first on Wednesday, plating a run with two outs in the second inning when Kyle Knudson singled home Tony Thomas who'd walked to start the inning. Maggi's two-out single in the third scored Jarek Cunningham to tie it at one but it was the only run Altoona scored on Wednesday.

New Britain once again capitalized with two outs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Joan Montero (2-3) allowed a single to Nate Hanson before walking Reynaldo Rodriguez to put two on with two outs. Brandon Waring delivered the two-out double to left to score both runners and place the 'Cats in front for the remainder of the game. All three of New Britain's runs on Wednesday were scored with two outs.

Montero, who was making his third start of the season, went a season-high five innings while allowing the three runs and walking two. Both of the batters walked by Montero on Wednesday eventually came around to score.

John Holdzkom, who was signed from the Amarillo Sox of the Independent American Association, was added to the active roster minutes prior to the game and made his organizational debut on Wednesday. He tossed two hitless innings and struck out three while inducing a double play. Ryan Beckman also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Done with the road for a brief four days, the Curve (28-49) return home at 7 p.m. Thursday night to welcome in the Binghamton Mets (AA - Mets) with special gates at 5 p.m. The Giants of Science will play on the Rocky Gap Casino Resort Entertainment Deck from 5-6:30 p.m. before we welcome in Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring) from the AMC hit show Breaking Bad thanks to Atlantic Broadband and Peoples. Esposito will throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for two hours during the game on Thursday. It'll also be a Thirsty ThursdayTM at the ballpark with 16oz. Bud Light drafts on special for $2 along with 22oz. sodas for $2.

On the bump for the series opening game with Binghamton will be LHP Joely Rodriguez (3-6, 4.48). He'll be opposed by B-Mets righty Hansel Robles (5-4 4.54) on Thursday night. Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
