Rock Cats Handle the Curve; Defeat Altoona 3-1

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats defeated the Altoona Curve by the score of 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

New Britain starter LHP Taylor Rogers had batters swinging and missing all afternoon, racking up 11 strikeouts on the day - setting a new career high and new season high for New Britain starters. The southpaw worked eight innings, scattering six hits allowing just one earned run while walking just one.

The Cats' leaped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from C Kyle Knudson. SS Tony Thomas scored on the play after leading off the inning with a walk.

Altoona's 3B Jarek Cunningham led off the top of the third with a single off of New Britain starter LHP Taylor Rogers and was moved around the bases, ultimately scoring on a 2B Drew Maggi base hit to left.

The ballgame would remain knotted 1-1 until 3B Brandon Waring slammed a double off the wall in leftfield, plating both DH Nate Hanson and 1B Reynaldo Rodriguez to give the Rock Cats a 3-1 lead after five innings of play.

Rogers handed the ball off to RHP Matt Summers to close out the bottom of the ninth, who worked a 1-2-3 inning to earn his first save of 2014.

Altoona's starter RHP Joan Montero sees his record fall to 2-2 with the loss. He lasted five innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on six hits while walking two and zero strikeouts.

New Britain takes their show on the road for a four-game series against New Hampshire starting Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jason Wheeler takes the hill for the Rock Cats and he will square off against RHP Radhames Liz, who pitched three seasons in the Majors with Baltimore from 2007-2009.
