SEATTLE - Seattle Storm center Simone Edwards today announced her retirement from the WNBA.

"Simone Edwards has been one of the Seattle Storm's biggest cornerstones. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work with and win a Championship with this incredible, inspirational young woman," said Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Anne Donovan. "Simone has been an integral part of the Storm's success both on the court and in making our mark in Seattle's community. Simone will be forever remembered with tremendous fondness, to the many whose lives she has touched."

The last remaining original member of the Storm and a member of the 2004 WNBA Champion Storm, Edwards was signed by the WNBA as a developmental player and assigned to the New York Liberty in 1997.

On May 2, 2000 Edwards was allotted as a free agent by the WNBA to the Seattle Storm. Edwards quickly emerged as a key post player, averaging 7.4 points per game in both 2000 and 2001 and starting 27 games the latter season. She averaged 7.0 points per game in 2002 and 2.9 points per game over the past three seasons.

"I feel fortunate to have been a member of the Storm since its beginning, it has been a wonderful journey," said Edwards. "To have the opportunity to win a championship and play in front of the best fans in the WNBA over the past six seasons has been an honor. I am very grateful to the Storm organization and will cherish the time I spent in Seattle."

Edwards will finish her career as a Storm all-time statistical leader in many categories including 4th in points with 936, 3rd in rebounds with 625, 5th in steals with 83, 4th in blocked shots with 56, 1st in game played with 178 and 4th in minutes played with 3,184.

The Seattle Storm will host a Simone Edwards retirement celebration Tuesday, May 23 at the Storm game vs. the Houston Comets.
