February 13, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
WICHITA, KS - Austin Fyten scored twice in the second period, and the South Carolina Stingrays (27-16-4-2) rolled past the Wichita Thunder (10-31-4-4) with a 4-1 victory Saturday night at the Intrust Bank Arena. The victory gave the Stingrays points in seven straight games, and the club finished the Midwest road trip at 3-0-1-0.
After the Thunder jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kenton Miller goal at 4:05 of the first period, the Stingrays battled back with a pair of goals in the opening frame to take a 2-1 lead.
A beautiful passing play would tie the game at one as Brett Cameron scored his 16th goal of the season. David Pacan threw a cross-ice pass to Cameron, and the forward deflected the puck past goaltender Grant Rollheiser's left pad to make it 1-1.
Joe Devin would score a power play goal with a two-man advantage at 16:20. After accepting a Brendan Ellis pass, his slapshot beat Rollheiser five-hole to make it 2-1 Stingrays. The goal was his 13th of the season.
In the second, Fyten would score twice, striking for his third goal of the season to make it 3-1 at 11:22. Caleb Herbert assisted, walking the puck down the left wing and centering a pass to Fyten. The forward slipped a shot underneath Rollheiser's right arm for the goal.
At 16:37, Fyten would score again. With the Stingrays shorthanded, Fyten accepted a Patrick Gaul pass and roofed a shot over Rollheiser's blocker that sent the water bottle flying off the net to make it 4-1. `
The game was chippy all night long with the two teams combining for 127 penalty minutes. The game featured three fights.
Vitek Vanecek earned the win in goal for the Stingrays, stopping 21 shots. South Carolina outshot the Thunder 37-22 and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Wichita was 0-for-6.
The Stingrays return home for the first of four straight games versus the rival Greenville Swamp Rabbits next week on Tuesday at the North Charleston Coliseum. That game is Ladies Night with FREE admission to all women 18 and up with a valid ID at the North Charleston Coliseum Box Office. The evening also features 2-for-1 tickets for guys and $2 beer and $2 hot dogs. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
