South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Columbia, SC - Marty Guerin scored two goals, and Davis Parley got his third shut out of the season, as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Columbia Inferno 5-0 at the Carolina Coliseum.
"I really liked the way we came out and attacked tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "They controlled most of the chances in the second period, but [Davis] Parley was strong, and we came out firing."
The South Carolina Stingrays scored early and often in this game, taking a 4-0 in the first 18 minutes. It started at 6:14 when Marty Guerin made a beautiful tic-tac-toe move to get by Todd Ford and give the Rays a 1-0 lead. The lone assist on the play went to Trent Campbell, and it was the 16th goal of the year for Guerin. At 8:19 it was Travis Morin getting his team leading 30th goal of the year on a one-timer from Chris Chaput and Cail MacLean on the power play. Only :14 seconds later it was Matt Scherer getting the one-timer from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Tim Judy. The goal came at 8:33 and was Scherer's 9th of the season. MacLean got in on the scoring as he got his 19th of the year from Morin and Chaput at 18:12. South Carolina out shot Columbia in the first period 13-4.
The second period started with a bang, quite literally. After the puck dropped Grant McNeill and Liam Huculak went toe to toe with both big men getting in some quality shots. In the end it was McNeill who took down Huculak to end the fight. That fight however, may have breathed some life into the Inferno as they played a markedly better period getting a number of quality chances on Davis Parley. Not to be outdone, Parley stopped every shot he faced, and the two teams skated to a scoreless second period.
Guerin got his second goal of the game, and his 17th of the year, at 1:29 of the third period from Paul McIlveen and Campbell to give the Rays a 5-0 lead, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped all 22 shots that he faced in order to post his 3rd shutout of the season, the fifth of the year for the Rays. The losing goaltender was Todd Ford who stopped 9 of the 13 shots he faced in just 18:12 in the first period before being replaced. Jeff Jakaitis stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced in just over two periods of play. The Rays went 1-4 on the power play while killing off all four short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action Friday night when they travel to Gwinnett to take on the Gladiators in a game seething with playoff implications. Game time will be at 7:35 P.M.
