Robertson Agrees To Terms, Cole Returns From AHL
March 12, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers and American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons, has agreed to terms with rookie defenseman David Robertson, Thunder head coach Chris Cichocki announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Additionally, it was announced veteran defenseman Phil Cole has been released from his professional tryout contract (PTO) with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL and has been re-assigned to the Thunder. Veteran defenseman Tim O'Connell was also placed on the three-day injured reserve list.
"We've needed more defensive depth and adding David gives us another solid player on the back-end with size and the ability to take care of our own defensive zone," said Cichocki. "He comes as a recommended defenseman from the Edmonton Oilers scouting staff and we're counting on him to play a simple game when his number is called."
Robertson, 22, will be available for his professional hockey debut on Friday, March 14 when the Thunder hosts the Fresno Falcons at Stockton Arena. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound blueliner recently completed a four-year college hockey career (2004-08) with Brown University (NCAA), appearing in 120 games while scoring 41 points (10g-31a) and amassing 72 penalty minutes. The Saunderstown, R.I. native logged a career-high 14 points (3g-11a) in 31 games for the Bears as a 2006-07 junior.
Cole returns to the Thunder after the 25-year old defenseman was loaned to Manitoba on March 8. Cole has played in 54 games with the Thunder this season, amassing 116 penalty minutes and six assists. The 6-foot-4, 197-pounder has appeared in 332 career professional games, scoring 53 points (11g-42a) and tallying 688 penalty minutes with Stockton, Victoria, Augusta, Cincinnati and Columbus of the ECHL and Manitoba, Philadelphia and Albany of the AHL.
The Thunder returns to play on Friday, March 14 against the Fresno Falcons, beginning at 7:30 p.m. from Stockton Arena. The game can be heard live on radio at 1420-AM KSTN (potentially joined in progress) and online (video and audio available) at http://www.stocktonthunder.com/, courtesy of B2 Networks.
The Thunder has led the ECHL in attendance for two consecutive seasons and drew 244,085 fans to Stockton Arena in 2006-07.
