Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 12, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (27-25-4-6, 64 points) lost 5-0 to the visiting South Carolina Stingrays (38-21-2-1, 79 points) to drop their second consecutive game against their cross-state rivals.
The Stingrays jumped out to an early lead when Marty Guerin scored his 16th of the year six minutes into the first period when he danced through a series of defenders and slipped the puck past a committed Todd Ford. Travis Morin put the Inferno at a 2-0 deficit at 8:19 when, camped out in the slot on the power play, he one-timed a Chris Chaput pass past Ford. Matt Scherer put the Inferno down 3-0 just 14 seconds later when, in an almost mirror image of Morin's goal, he parked himself in the slot and one-timed a Pierre-Luc O'Brien pass into the net past Ford. Winger Cail MacLean built the Stingrays lead to 4-0 when he tapped his own rebound past Ford with less than two minutes left in the second period, prompting Inferno head coach Troy Mann to replace Ford with Jeff Jakaitis.
The Inferno tightened up their play in the second period, but were unable to solve Stingrays goalie Davis Parley, who stopped all 12 shots in the middle frame.
Guerin scored his second of the night and effectively iced the game 90 seconds into the third period, when he fluttered a wristshot over Jakaitis' shoulder.
Parley stopped all 22 shots he faced, while Ford stopped nine of 13 and Jakaitis 14 of 15.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum to host the Florida Everblades on Friday, March 14 at 7:05 p.m for St. Hat Tricks Day. Fans are encouraged to bring hats to be tossed on the ice during the second intermission. The hats will then be donated to the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital; fans bringing hats for donation will receive $3 off their tickets.
