Idaho Steelheads News Release
Fresno, CA - Four Falcons' skaters registered one goal and one assist to help fuel a 6-4 win over the Steelheads on Tuesday night in front of 3,751 fans at the SaveMart Center, sending the visitors to their fifth loss in the last six games.
The Steelheads (34-22-9) have yet to beat the Falcons (35-15-8) in the season series (0-4-1) and they now trail the Pacific Division's second-best team by one point in the National Conference playoff picture.
The Falcons scored their first of two, opening period goals at 15:09 when Matt Quinn swept home a loose puck from outside the Steelheads' crease that originated off a partially blocked point shot. The even-strength marker, Quinn's 11th, was set up by Joe Van Culin and Daryl Marcoux.
Kenny Bernard made it 2-0 just 1:32 before intermission, ripping a shot over the glove of Kellen Briggs (19 saves) for his 10th of the campaign. On the play, Steelheads defenseman Darrell Hay fell down, coughing up the puck deep in his defensive zone, which allowed Stuart MacRae to find the disc and slip it through the slot and to a wide open Bernard.
The Falcons made it 3-0 at 4:10 of the second period on a blast from the blue line by Matt O'Dette. Quinn and Mike Ramsay grabbed the assists.
Matt Craig got the Steelheads on the board sneaking a snap shot inside the far post and past Falcons' goaltender Jake Moreland (31 saves) to convert on a partial breakaway at the 13:05 mark. Taggart Desmet got the lone assist.
The Falcons responded however; as Tyler Kindle banged home a rebound at 14:41 to give the home team a 4-1 advantage. After that goal, Matt Zaba (3 saves on 3 shots) came in to replace Briggs for the remainder of the second period.
After 40 minutes of play the Falcons led 4-1 despite being out-shot 24-19.
With Briggs back between the pipes, the Steelheads inched closer to start the third period with Lammers netting his 25th in just 29 games this season and Kory Scoran swatting home a rebound off Hay's shot for a shorthanded goal at 6:11. Galbraith and Scoran set up Lammers' tally at 3:13, while Scoran's marker was his fourth of the year.
Falcons' forward Brady Leisenring essentially iced the game with a power play goal at the 14:39 mark, wristing a shot from the top of the left circle past Briggs. Kindle and P.O. Beaulieu got the assists.
In the final minute of the game, Falcons' center Josh Prudden scored into an empty-net, with Oren Eizenman setting up the goal to make it 6-3. Steelheads' veteran forward John Snowden then scored with 14 seconds left, a power play goal from Colin Sinclair and Craig to round out the scoring.
The final shots favored the Steelheads 35-28, with both teams converting once on the man advantage. Briggs (15-11-2) is now winless in his last four decisions, while Moreland (18-6-4) has won four straight and five of his last seven starts.
The Steelheads are now off for eight days before returning home to take on the Stockton Thunder on Wednesday, March 19. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" or via the B2 Networks. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
