South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - On Satruday, February 20, the South Carolina Stingrays hosted their Fourth Annual Pink in the Rink night benefiting Susan G. Komen-Lowcountry and raised over $40,000 to help fight breast cancer, the largest amount raised in team history. A Pink in the Rink-record crowd of 6,801 saw the Stingrays defeat the Toledo Walleye 6-0 while skating on a pink rink and wearing pink jerseys and playing with pink sticks.
"I held back tears as I absorbed the dark pink color of the skating rink," said Executive Director of Susan G. Komen-Lowcountry Taffy Tamblyn. "Watching the players practice with their pink jersey was an amazing sight. The most emotional part of the fabulous evening was watching the survivors walk onto the rink and their accepting the pink hockey sticks from the players."
The pink jerseys were auctioned off live at the end of the game and raised over $17,000 and the sticks joined the silent auction on the Coliseum main concourse and raised $2,300. The silent auction, which featured an authentic NFL New Orleans Saints helmet autographed by Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees, an official game puck from the Washington Capitals signed by NHL star Alex Ovechkin and much more generated over $15,000. Other items that raised money for the cause were group and individual ticket sales, vendor tables, raffles and special events.
"I was honored to be one of the survivors on the ice that evening when the Stingrays presented us with their pink sticks," said cancer survivor Patti Masonis. "They were so kind and sincere with their words of 'Congratulations on your fight for survival.' As a two-time survivor, volunteer and advocate, I've attended many fundraisers, but this was a new experience for me. I loved it! What a thrilling time. I'll be back to cheer on the Stingrays in their 'fight for survival' on the road to another Kelly Cup."
"We were very excited about our partnership with the Stingrays and the Komen Foundation for Pink in the Rink," said Carol Cottrell of East Cooper Medical Center, the official sponsor of Pink in the Rink. "The event brought great attention to a very worthwhile cause, and we were proud to participate in an event that raised so many dollars to help provide mammograms for women of the Lowcountry."
