Stingrays Close Regular-Season Schedule with 4-1 Win over Jackals

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (43-23-2-4) closed the 2013-14 regular season with a 4-1 victory over the Elmira Jackals (24-39-3-5) at the North Charleston Coliseum on Fan Appreciation Night and The Post and Courier Hall of Fame Night Friday evening. The Stingrays open the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs with the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinals next weekend. The full postseason schedule and opponent will be released Sunday evening.

The Elmira Jackals kicked off the scoring 3:51 into the first period when former Stingrays forward Jordan Pietrus lifted a shot over the glove of netminder Allen York (W, 24 saves on 25 shots) from the right-wing circle. Just over two minutes later, Stingrays forward Jack Downing tied the contest slipping a backhanded shot past the blocker of Jackals goaltender Chris Driedger (L, 41 saves on 44 shots) at 5:32. Forwards Jordan Owens and Nick Larson added assists. Late in the frame and with Jackals forward Colin Jacobs in the penalty box for high-sticking, forward Wayne Simpson put the Stingrays up 2-1 with a power-play tally at 16:51 from defenseman Brendan Ellis and forward Brett Gensler.

Larson gave the Stingrays a two-goal cushion with 1:13 remaining in the second period ripping a shot under the glove of Dreidger unassisted. In the third period, forward Igor Gongalsky sealed the victory with an empty-net marker. Simpson picked up the lone assist. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play while the Jackals went 0-for-3.
