Stingrays Bring in Defenseman

March 27, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that the team signed defenseman Rich Spiller. The Stingrays picked up Spiller after the Pensacola Ice Pilots waived him earlier in the week. Spiller joined the team yesterday and is expected to be in uniform this weekend, when the team wraps up its regular season at Augusta, on Friday and at home against Pee Dee, on Saturday.

Spiller, a 6'-3" defenseman, is a second year professional who spent last season with New Haven of the UHL. Spiller has spent time with Pensacola, Richmond, Arkansas and Jackson in the ECHL this season.

"With the injury to Mike Jickling, we needed someone who could step in and play," commented Fitzsimmons. "Rich is a big strong defenseman that has two years of professional experience. He could prove to be a valuable asset to this team in the weeks to come.

Spiller played college hockey at Northeastern University in the Hockey East. In 65 games last year in New Haven, he had six goals and nine assists for fifteen points and 132 penalty minutes. The native of Towaco, New Jersey becomes the seventh defenseman on the Stingrays roster.

The Stingrays are currently in second place in the Northeast Division with two games remaining. The team will face either Florida or Pee Dee in the first round of the playoffs. The playoffs will start next Wednesday, at the Coliseum, should the team hold second place.
