Generals Gearing Up for Final Weekend
March 27, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greensboro Generals News Release
Greensboro, NC â The Greensboro Generals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) are on the verge of claiming their first post-season berth in team history as they enter the final weekend of the regular season. With three games to go, including two at home, the Generals only need one more point to clinch a spot in the second season. Greensboro also still has a realistic shot at winning the northeast division crown, as they trail the first place Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies by only three points.
The Generals next game is tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Greensboro Coliseum against their in-state rival Charlotte Checkers, who are also fighting for their playoff lives. The game will decide the winner of the Carolina Cup, which goes to the team that wins the season series between the two clubs. In addition to clinching a playoff spot by beating Charlotte, the Generals would also win the Carolina Cup for the first time in their four-year history by defeating Charlotte in regulation. Charlotte needs a win or tie to retain the trophy. The Generals are also offering a terrific promotion for Friday's contest, with the first 1,000 people in the building receiving 2002-2003 Generals team photos. Following the game, Generals' players will be in the Coliseum plaza signing autographs. The first 1,000 children will also receive a Hanes tagless t-shirt and a Hanes Sharpie.
On Saturday night at 7:30, the Generals have their final home game of the regular season against the Lexington Men O' War. The first 1,000 fans at Saturday's game will receive a pair of Hanes boxers. The Generals regular season then closes out at the Greenville Grrrowl at 3:05 on Sunday afternoon. Should the Generals win two of their final three games, they would lock up home ice advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs.
The first round of the 2003 Kelly Cup playoffs begin next week. Should the Generals clinch a playoff spot, a schedule of their first round games and opponent will be announced no later than Monday. All games can be heard on AM-950 WPET and www.greensborogenerals.com, however, Sunday's game will be tape delayed until 6:00. Fans can also receive the latest Generals information at www.greensborogenerals.com.
