South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Jared Bednar announced today that defensemen Sean Collins and Patrick McNeill and forward Steve Pinizzotto have been assigned to the team from the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears. All three players are scheduled to be in the lineup Friday when the Stingrays visit the Florida Everblades at 7:30 p.m.
Collins, 24, went scoreless with 11 penalty minutes in 10 games this season for Hershey. He signed with the Washington Capitals last March following the conclusion of his senior year at Ohio State, where he accumulated 87 points (28g, 59a) in 157 career games for the Buckeyes. Last season the Troy, Michigan native captained the Buckeyes and led the team with 28 points, earning All-CCHA 2nd Team honors. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound blueliner went on to play three regular season contests for Hershey, going pointless with two penalty minutes.
"I think he's going to be a good two-way d-man, from what I understand," Bednar said. He moves the puck pretty well, and he gives us a much-needed shot from the right side. He was out of the lineup for a couple of months, and he needs to get some playing time".
McNeill, 20, began the 2007-08 campaign with South Carolina, registering 10 points (3g, 7a) and 14 penalty minutes in nine games before he was recalled to Hershey on Nov. 6. With the Bears this season, the 6-foot, 195-pound defenseman has collected nine points (1g, 8a) and eight penalty minutes in 25 contests.
"I wasn't expecting to see Pat McNeill again, to tell you the truth," Bednar said. "He played unbelievably for us when he was with us at the start of the year."
Pinizzotto, 23, was recalled from the Stingrays Dec. 29 after totaling 16 points (10g, 6a) in 20 games. As a member of the Bears this season, the Mississauga, Ontario native pocketed two assists and six penalty minutes in seven contests.
"He played really well when he was up there," Bednar said. "Now that they're (Hershey) getting healthy...he needs to play a lot, and they figure it's better for his development if he's down here getting more ice time."
In addition, RW Stephen Werner has been loaned to the AHL's Springfield Falcons from Hershey. Werner, 23, spent the majority of the 2007-08 campaign with South Carolina, gathering 21 points (6g, 15a) and 24 penalty minutes in 25 games prior to his Dec. 9 recall. In eight contests for Hershey this season, the Chevy Chase, MD native recorded five points (1g, 4a) and two penalty minutes.
