Max Jones scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 3:40 of overtime completing a London Knights comeback as they beat the Sarnia Sting 5-4.

Jones picked up the puck near centre ice and put himself in good position as he skated to the front of the net to beat Fazio with the winner before a large crowd of 4,522 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.

Chandler Yakimowicz and JJ Piccinich each had a goal and an assist for London. Victor Mete rounded out the scoring for the Knights and Evan Bouchard added two assists.

Noah Bushnell was named first star and Sasha Chmelevski the second star, as they led the Sting with a goal and an assist. Matt Mistele and Nikita Korostelev also scored for the Sting who managed to secure back-to-back points despite the two heart breaking losses.

Justin Fazio stopped 28 shots for Sarnia and was under siege for most of the second and third periods. Brendan Burke turned aside 20 of 24 shots for London.

Both teams were missing key players still participating at the World Junior Championships.

London started the game by taking the play to Sarnia; forcing Fazio to make a great save, as he stopped Max Jones on a breakaway. The save set the tone for Sarnia as they came alive scoring the only two goals of the opening period and were the better team in the first 20 minutes, out-shooting London 9-8.

Connor Schlichting, let go a blast from the blue line and Mistele was able to get his stick on it and tipped it in past goaltender Burke, at 7:12. In addition to Schlichting, Jordan Kyrou also assisted on the play.

Bushnell, made it 2-0 after he received a pass in front from Chmelevski in the corner which left him with a gaping wide open net. Chmelevski and Patrick White were credited with the helpers.

The pace of the game picked up in the second period with both teams creating lots of scoring chances. At the end of 40 minutes, London notched three goals while Sarnia scored twice, holding on to a 4-3 lead.

Chmelevski made it 3-0 after taking a pass from Ryan Mcgregor, at 4:06. London scored the next two goals to slice the deficit to one goal as Yakimowicz and Mattinen beat Fazio. Sarnia stretched their lead back to two goals at 4-2 on a goal from Korostelev at 14:41. The Knights didn't quit, scoring once more on a power play goal from Piccinich at 16:19. London out shot Sarnia 13-9 in the 2nd.

The third period saw Sarnia fall into early penalty trouble and the London Knights took advantage scoring the equalizer off the stick of Victor Mete. The power play goal came at 5:03 and the assists went to Piccinich and Bouchard.

Sting Notebook: Sarnia will swing back in action next Friday at the SSEC against the Owen Sound Attack (7:05 puck drop) before going on the road for two games, to Saginaw for a Saturday night encounter and then to the Soo, for an afternoon tilt on Sunday against the Greyhounds.
