Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack were downed in overtime by the defending Memorial Cup champions on Saturday, Jan. 2.
After taking a 4-2 lead into the 3rd period, the Attack saw the Generals score three straight; including the overtime winner, to walk away with a 5-4 overtime win.
Looking to rebound after a disappointing performance on Friday afternoon, the Attack made sure to find the back of the net early.
Just 1:35 into the opening frame, Jacob Friend would score his first career Ontario Hockey League goal on a blistering wrist shot from the slot. Given all day by the Generals, Friend made no mistake in beating Oshawa's Logan Gauthier with assists from Josh Sterk and Liam Dunda.
The Generals would respond though, taking advatange of a weird bounce off of the end boards in the Attack zone.
A dump-in by Robbie Burt would carom off of the end wall and bounce right out in front of the Owen Sound cage, where Studnicka would bang it past a sprawled out Michael McNiven at 8:49 of the 1st.
Oshawa would double then double their lead at the 12:34 mark, with Kenny Heuther banging home a loose puck at the side of McNiven's cage.
That one goal lead would be short lived, however.
Just 17 seconds later, Attack assistant captain Bryson Cianfrone was able to get wood on a Thomas Schemitsch point shot and deflect it into the Generals' net, making it a 2-2 game with 7:09 remaining in the 1st period.
Owen Sound would continue the torrid pace of the first period, taking the lead once again on a wrap around by rookie Matthew Struthers.
The 16 year old's 4th goal of the season would come at the 16:31 mark, and bring Oshawa's Jeremy Brodeur into the game. Assists on the goal that chased Gauthier from the game would go to Josh Sterk, his 2nd of the game, and Justin Brack.
Another goal wouldn't come until just after the halfway point of the 2nd period.
After successfully dispatching a 5 on 3 Paul Davis Systems Penalty Kill, Josh Sterk was able to find a streaking Thomas Schemitsch who wristed a shot up and over the shoulder of Jeremy Brodeur at 10:27 of the 2nd to make it a 4-2 lead for the home side. Santino Centorame also assisted on the play, which was Schemitsch's 5th goal of the year.
The Generals weren't about to roll over though.
With 8:06 left in the game, Lukas Lofquist would draw the visitors within one by crashing the net and jamming a loose puck past McNiven.
They would then tie the game at four with 4:40 remaining in regulation, with Kenny Heuther picking up his 2nd goal of the game on a shot that eluded McNiven through the five-hole.
Heuther's marker would be enough to send the game to overtime, and it would be another General goal that ended it, just 2:09 into the extra frame.
Jalen Smereck would bag the game winning goal, going low glove side to end the game and complete the comeback for the visitors.
Josh Sterk's three point performance earned him Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game, while Jacob Friend's 1st career marker helped him pick up 3rd star honours. Oshawa's Kenny Heuther rounded out the stars of the game with a 2nd star performance.
Jaden Lindo was named the Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game on the evening.
