Sterlin Thompson Has Three Hits in Yard Goats Setback

Reading, PA - The Reading Fightin Phils scored four runs over the first two innings, and cruised past the Hartford Yard Goats 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania. William Simoneit cracked a two-run triple and Marcus Lee Sang added a two-run homer for the Fightins in the first game of the six-game series. Sterlin Thompson had three hits for the Yard Goats who have now lost four in a row. Hartford was 0-8 with Runners in scoring position. The Yard Goats bullpen only allowed one run in the final four innings of work.
The Fightin Phils scored the first run of the game in the first inning against Hartford starting pitcher Connor Van Scoyoc. Jose Ramirez doubled and scored on a single to center field by Carson Taylor, giving Reading the early lead.
Reading added three runs in the second inning. Van Scoyoc struck out the first batter of the inning but then walked the next two men. William Simoneit followed with a base-clearing two-run triple to center field, scoring Baron Radcliff and Ethan Wilson, making it 3-0 Fightins. Simoneit would later score on a wild pitch and it was 4-0 Reading after two innings.
The Yard Goats best threat against Reading starter Noah Skirrow came in the third inning. With two outs, Hartford loaded the bases on a single, walk and hit batsman. However, Yanquiel Fernandez popped up in the infield to end the inning.
The Fightin Phils made it 6-1 on Marcus Lee Sang's two-run home run in the fourth inning, an opposite field blast into the seats.
The Yard Goats and Fightin Phils will play the second game of the six-game series on Wednesday night at 6:45 PM at FirstEnergy Stadium in PA. LHP Carson Palmquist will start for the Yard Goats and RHP Efrain Contreras will pitch for Reading.
