The Story:
The Giants tallied three goals in 2:05 during the first period and held on from there, despite Portland pouring on the pressure for much of the night. James Stefan got the Hawks on the board late in the third, but Vancouver's Jesper Vikman was nearly flawless between the pipes to keep Portland at bay.
Connor Horning drew first blood for Vancouver with a power-play strike just over halfway through the opening frame, before Ty Thorpe made it 2-0 under a minute later. Capping off a torrid two minutes, Nicco Camazzola launched a shot from the blue line that eluded Dante Giannuzzi and made it 3-0 Vancouver at just 12:23 of the first.
Portland responded with a barrage of shots, but Vikman was unflappable for most of the night, turning aside breakaways, deflections, power-play bombs and anything else the Hawks threw at him until James Stefan found twine late in the third. Gabe Klassen found Tyson Kozak to the left of the net, who then shuffled a slick backhand pass across the goalmouth to Stefan for the finish.
The Winterhawks return to action next Friday in Seattle.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"I thought our team had a really good game. We had 40 shots tonight. I think we outplayed them pretty much the whole game. Just had a tough start in the first."
