Oil Kings Earn Weekend Split with Win over Hitmen

November 7, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (9-3-1-1) got a pair of goals from Jakub Demek and 29 saves from rookie goaltender Kolby Hay as they defeated the Calgary Hitmen (5-6-0-0) 3-2 on Saturday night at Rogers Place.

The Oil Kings came out with a purpose in the first period looking to put the rough outing from the night previous behind them and at the 10:41 mark of the first they got on the board first after Jalen Luypen stole the puck in the neutral zone, busted into the Calgary zone down the left-wing boards and centered to a wide-open Josh Williams, who elevated the puck past Brayden Peters.

Edmonton's one-goal lead stood up until 9:02 of the second period when Zac Funk equalized the score after jumping on a loose puck at the side of the Oil Kings net and whacking home a backhand.

The Oil Kings restored their lead 5:07 later after Logan Dowhaniuk refused to allow the Hitmen to clear their zone, carted the puck to the left-circle, snapped a hard shot off the pads of Peters and a falling Demek was able to sweep home the rebound for his first of the night.

As time expired in the second period, Hitmen defenceman Keagan Slaney got his stick up on Oil Kings forward Dawson Seitz and was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for cross-checking. The Oil Kings capitalized on the lengthy man-advantage 4:58 into the third period after Simon Kubicek and Luke Prokop worked the puck high around the Hitmen zone before laying the puck on a tee for Demek in the right-wing circle that he one-timed past Peters to increase the Edmonton lead to 3-1.

The Hitmen were able to pull within a goal thanks to a power play marker of their own at the 9:49 mark of the third after Cael Zimmerman got a friendly bounce off an Oil Kings defender with a point-shot.

The Hitmen pressed for an equalizer late, but Hay barred the door to preserve the 3-2 win.

Hay finished the night with 29 saves, while Peters turned away 37 shots in the losing cause. The Oil Kings went 1-for-4 on the power play, the Hitmen were 1-for-2.
