Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads took out a little frustration on the Victoria Salmon Kings Saturday night, avenging Friday night's lackluster home loss with a 6-2 decision over the visitors from British Columbia. 4,437 fans saw the Steelheads improve their record to 5-2-0.
The tone was set at the opening faceoff, when Idaho's Lance Galbraith and Victoria's Ryan Wade dropped the gloves at the 6-second mark. Inspired, the Steelheads controlled play and struck early when Warren Peters skated left to right across the front of the crease and beat Salmon Kings netminder David Brumby at 39 seconds. Idaho scored again to make it 2-0 when Brett Draney, skating along the right boards, dropped the puck to David Cornacchia, who beat Brumby with a wrist shot at 6:21. Idaho made it 3-0 just 21 seconds later as Bobby Russell scored his third of the season off an assist by Cornacchia at 6:42. Later in the period, with Idaho a man down, Scott Burt scored his third of the season, taking a long outlet pass from Peter Metcalf, and blasted a shot past Brumby. The shorthanded goal made it 4-0 at 15:16. Idaho outshot Victoria 17-9 in the period, matching its season high, recorded in the second period of the Oct. 31 game at Fresno (2-1 Idaho shootout win). The four goals are the most scored in the first period by any team in the ECHL this season.
Idaho, on its first power play of the game in the second, pressured the Victoria net. Lance Galbraith, on the doorstep to Brumby's left, took four whacks at the puck, and was finally rewarded with his second goal of the season to give Idaho a 5-0 lead at 11:32. The Steelheads continued to pour it on, as Peter Metcalf slammed home a rebound at 15:31 to make it 6-0. Frank Doyle replaced Colin Zulianello in the Idaho net at 15:31, but Zulianello got credit for his first win in an Idaho uniform.
Victoria broke through at 10:01 of the final period. After a defensive breakdown deep in the Idaho end, Ryan Watson stole the puck and beat Doyle upstairs with the unassisted goal. Another Idaho defensive problem resulted in the second Salmon King goal. Ryan Finnerty notched his third goal in two nights as he snuck the puck past Doyle to make it 6-2, Idaho at 11:11.
