Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, NC - The Checkers are starting a new winning streak. After having their season-opening, four-game winning streak snapped Friday night against Trenton, Charlotte came back Saturday night with a 3-2 triumph over the South Carolina Stingrays at Cricket Arena. Jason Dawe scored the game-winner at 6:09 of the third period, and the Checkers survived a late South Carolina power play for the victory. Dusty Jamieson and Eddie Pershin had the other Checkers goals while goalie Kelly Guard won his second game in as many starts with 17 saves. The victory also propelled the Checkers into first place in the Eastern Division of the ECHL's American Conference. "We played much better tonight and I liked the way we held our own physically," remarked Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "We're tough to beat five on five. It was nice to see the guys limit the shots on our goalie, and while Kelly didn't face a lot of shots, he had to make some key saves for us at the end."
The Checkers took an early lead as Jamieson took a quick snapshot just outside the crease that beat Stingrays goalie Kirk Daubenspeck at 3:15 of the first period for a 1-0 Charlotte lead. The Checkers dominated the first period outshooting the Stingrays 9-3.
In the second period Charlotte's penalty killing unit yielded a pair of goals in a two minute span as South Carolina took a 2-1 lead. The Stingrays Joe Tenute connected at 3:32 followed by a Matt Elich strike at 5:34. After South Carolina's second goal gave them the lead, the Checkers dug in their heals and responded with heavy pressure. The intensity paid off as Pershin blasted a 30 footer by Daubenspeck at 11:57 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2.
The Checkers grabbed their second and decisive lead of the game at 6:09 of the third period as Dawe wristed a shot in from the slot to give Charlotte a 3-2 advantage. The Stingrays pressured late and forced the Checkers to kill off a penalty with 6:03 left. South Carolina pulled their goalie late and Charlotte withstood several last minute Stingrays chances before pulling off the win.
The Checkers improved to 5-1-0 for 10 points while South Carolina fell to 4-3-1 for nine points. Charlotte will close out its four-game homestand Wednesday night at Cricket Arena when they'll host the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available now through the Charlotte Checkers office by calling (704) 342-4ICE, through all TicketMaster locations, or on line through www.TicketMaster.com.
