Stathopoulos hat trick fuels Inferno win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Mike Stathopoulos turned in a hat trick as the Columbia Inferno defeated the Charlotte Checkers 6-2 Saturday in front of 9,644 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Stahopoulos was named the First Star of the game.

Columbia took a commanding 4-1 lead in the second period after a 1-1 first period.

Columbia scored the first goal of the game as Derek Campbell scored at the 5:24 mark of the first period. The Checkers answered back with a goal by Steve MacIntyre form Dusty Jamieson at the 19:20 mark of the opening frame.

Columbia scored three goals in the second period lead by two from Stahopoulos. Marc-Andre Bernier added another goal for the Inferno.

Charlotte cut into the Columbia lead with a goal by Kenton Smith making the score 4-2, but another goal by Stathopoulos and one from Leon Hayward set the final at 6-2.
