Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- For the first time this season the IronBirds lost by more than two runs as they fell 4-1 to the Staten Island Yankees, dropping them to 1-10 on the season.

RHP Nick Cunningham got the start for the IronBirds while RHP Andy Beresford) started for the Yankees.

The Yankees almost scored a run in the top of the first, but after a Ty McFarland fly out to center, center fielder Oswill Lartiguez fired a rocket from center to home to get a tag out on base runner Austin Aune, keeping the Yankees off the board.

But the Yankees did score in the top of the second. Renzo Martini hit a one-out ground ball to short and was safe after a throwing error charged to Aberdeen short stop Justin Viele. After a fly out, short stop Thairo Estrada stepped up and hit a single down the first base line that got past a diving Cory Segui; that hit allowed Martini to reach third. Next up was second baseman Jake Anderson, who hit a single down the third base line, scoring Martini.

The Yankees doubled up the score in the top of the third. Center fielder Daniel Lopez hit a lead-off triple and was eventually able to make it home when Aune stepped up and hit a single to center. The Yankees led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the third.

The IronBirds answered in the bottom of the inning. Cory Segui hit a lead-off single to right field and moved to second after Viele hit a sacrifice bunt. Then came Steve Wilkerson, who hit an RBI double, scoring Segui, making it 2-1 in favor of Staten Island.

That was all the offense the IronBirds would muster for the rest of the game as they would only manage to get one more hit after that inning. They finished the game with five hits total.

The Yankees got two more runs, in the seventh and ninth, to dash all hopes of a comeback for the IronBirds.

The IronBirds fall to 1-10 on the season, marking the worst start in franchise history.

Reliever Matt Wotherspoon (1-0) earned the win, as Cunningham (0-1) took the loss. RHP Chad Taylor got the save, his first of the season.

Tomorrow night the IronBirds and Yankees play the final game in their two-game series. RHP Stefan Crichton (1-1, 6.00) is expected to start for the IronBirds while RHP David Palladino (0-0, 0.00) is slated to start for the Yankees.
