Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
IronBirds Get Swept
Once again the Aberdeen IronBirds lost by one run, marking the seventh time that has happened this season. In last night's game the IronBirds were able to get seven hits, which was an improvement from the night before, but they only managed one run for the fifth time this season. The IronBirds were three for 23 with runners in scoring position that series, bringing them to 10 for 87 on the season with an average of .115. The IronBirds went down by one at the top of the first, but then were able to get a run of their own in the third, before allowing a Michael Bernal solo home run to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish.
Pitching and fielding
LHP Augey Bill got the start for the IronBirds; his Cyclone counterpart was LHP Carlos Valdez. Bill didn't get off to a great start as he allowed two hits and a run in the top of the first, after that he allowed five more hits and a home run before being relieved by RHP Ivan Hernandez. Bill's final stat line was 4.1 innings pitched, seven hits, two runs earned, one home run and one strikeout. Valdez, who got the win, (1-0) finished with five innings pitched, one earned run, one walk, and three strikeouts. The IronBirds defense only had one error on the night, and C Jonah Heim was able to throw out three runners trying to steal second.
Offensive Issues
The IronBirds' .115 average with RISP is the lowest in the NY-Penn league, and their 1-6 stat line from last night didn't help that average. In this series with Brooklyn, the IronBirds left 46 runners on base. The IronBirds are currently batting .207 and are averaging 2.3 runs per game; both are the worst marks in the NY-Penn League. Despite those issues, C Alex Murphy is fourth in the NY-Penn League in batting average with .359 and fourth in hits with 14; he is currently on a six game hitting streak.
Start of a New Series
In their last series against the Staten Island Yankees, the IronBirds went 1-2, registering their only win of the season. In that series, the IronBirds had a team batting average of .208 and an average ERA of 2.04. The Yankees are coming off of a 1-2 series against Hudson Valley, including a 3-4 extra inning (11) loss last night. They're currently batting .209 with an average ERA of 2.78.
