Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - On a day when the top of the Lowell Spinners line-up had 1,869 combined games of Major League experience atop the line-up, it was the Connecticut Tigers whose offense cruised to a 15-hit 11-3 win over the Spinners Monday night at LeLacheur Park.
The two big leaguers, Shane Victorino and Andres Torres, combined to go 0-for-7 atop the line-up.
Connecticut (4-7) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, the first earned runs allowed by Jason Garcia during the 2014 season. They would tack on two additional runs in the fifth inning, chasing Garcia from the game and putting the Spinners in a 5-0 hole.
Lowell (5-6) would pull within three in the fourth inning getting on the board with back-to-back doubles from Sam Travis and Jordan Betts. After two strikeouts, Mike Meyers and Raymel Flores singled to score Betts and bring the score to 5-2.
The Tigers took back one run in the fifth inning but the Spinners got that run back in the sixth on a solo home run by Betts, his third of the season, all at LeLacheur Park.
It was all Tigers from that point however as Connecticut as the Tigers scored two in the seventh and three in the ninth en route to an 11-3 win.
Victorino, making a one-game pit stop in Lowell as he continues his rehab from a hamstring injury, popped out in his first at-bat, grounded out in the third inning and flew out to deep left-center in his third and final at-bat. He's scheduled to head to Pawtucket Tuesday night.
Travis and Betts paced the offense, each with two-hit games. Betts' three home runs this season at LeLacheur Park pull him within two of the 2013 squad's total output at home.
Garcia (0-1, 3.00) allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk, striking out six in three innings. Oscar Perez followed, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out two over three innings. Ellis Jimenez closed out the game with two innings, allowing three runs on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The two teams conclude the brief two-game set Tuesday Night when Heri Quevedo takes the mound for a 7:05 first pitch.
