TROY, NY --- Ravel Santana broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run homer and Alfredo Gonzalez followed with a solo home run off Lake Monsters reliever Dominique Vattuone to give the Tri-City ValleyCats a 6-2 victory over Vermont in New York-Penn League action Monday night at Bruno Stadium.

Vattuone (0-1) had come on in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded to record the final out of inning to keep the game tied 2-2, but the ValleyCats got back-to-back one-out singles before the back-to-back home runs in the four-run inning. The home runs were the first allowed by a Vermont pitcher in the last eight games since Lowell hit one home run in each of the first three contests of the season.

Vermont had jumped out on top in the first inning as Scott Masik was hit by a pitch with two outs, Joe Bennie walked and Justin Higley followed with an RBI single to rightfield for his league-leading 16th RBI in just 11 games this season. The ValleyCats tied the game in the third with an unearned run off Lake Monsters starter Joe Michaud, who allowed just the one run on six hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over six innings. Michaud has not allowed an earned run with no walks and 10 strikeouts in 13 innings over his last two starts.

Brett Vertigan gave the Lake Monsters a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning with a one-out home run to right for his first home run of the season. It was also the first home run by a Vermont player other than Higley (three). After the Vertigan home run ValleyCat pitchers retired the next 11 Vermont batters and 14 of the final 15 to close out the game (only baserunner was a Joe Bennie leadoff single in 9th).

Brandon McNitt (1-0) had three strikeouts in three perfect innings to earn the victory in relief of Austin Chrismon, who allowed two runs on four hits over five innings. Ariel Ovando was 3-for-4 with a run scored for Tri-City (7-4), which moved one game in front of Vermont (6-5) for first-place in the Stedler Division. Lake Monsters reliever Kevin Ferreras struggled with his control in the seventh, walking three and allowing one hit as the ValleyCats scored a run to tie game 2-2.

Vermont and Tri-City will wrap up the brief two-game series on Tuesday night before the Lake Monsters travel to Connecticut for games against the Tigers Wednesday and Thursday. Vermont then returns home on Friday to begin a six-game homestand.
