-SPIKES START SIX-GAME HOMESTAND TONIGHT: The State College Spikes are now nine games out in front of Williamsport for the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead, and are just a game off the pace for the best record in the NYPL. Tonight, the Spikes begin a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against the Aberdeen IronBirds at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park after last night's opener of the three-game series was postponed due to wet grounds. Hudson Valley, the club leading the NYPL McNamara Division, visits from Saturday through Monday in the back half of the homestand. Aberdeen currently sits in fourth place in the McNamara, and eight games outside the NYPL Wild Card. State College is 7-15 all-time against the IronBirds, and 5-7 in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes used a 17-hit attack, including home runs from Robelys Reyes and Danny Diekroeger, to bolster a solid start from Ian McKinney in his return to the club and take a 13-8 victory from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field.
Reyes notched his second home run of the season with a solo shot to right field in the third inning as part of a three-hit night in which he came a triple shy of the cycle. Diekoreger added the exclamation point to the night with his fourth long ball of the year, a three-run homer in the ninth that gave the Spikes ample insurance at the end of the game.
State College took a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, and withstood a Mahoning Valley rally late in the contest to hang on for the win. Seven different Spikes delivered multiple hits, and five players collected multiple runs batted in during the game.
McKinney made his return to the Spikes after compiling a 1.26 ERA over six starts at Rookie-level Johnson City, and put together a quality effort early on in the game. The southpaw retired 14 straight batters from the first through the sixth innings, and yielded just four hits and a hit batsman over the first six frames.
-ANDERSON, PEREZ TO GET STARTS TONIGHT: Right-hander Will Anderson has won his last four decisions, and gets the ball tonight for the Spikes in Game One. Anderson made his shortest outing of the year last time out, going four innings and allowing two runs on five hits and a walk against Auburn. The Pleasanton, CA native has gone at least five innings in every start prior to his last appearance, and twice has logged seven innings on the hill in a single outing. Left-hander Dewin Perez, who went a season-long seven innings in a win over Auburn last time out, gets the start in Game Two. Perez has faced 447 consecutive batters without allowing a home run since his first profssional start in 2012.
-IRONBIRDS GO WITH CHLEBORAD, LONG FOR STARTERS: Right-hander Tanner Chleborad makes his fourth start of the year and sixth appearance for Aberdeen tonight in Game One. Chleborad went a career-long five innings on the mound in a no-decision against Connecticut last time out on Thursday. The Washington State product, who was selected by the Orioles in the 16th round of the 2014 MLB Draft, has recorded just five strikeouts, but only two walks, over his first 12 2/3 innings as a professional. Chleborad's road ERA in two appearances is 3.86, compared to a 1.13 home ERA over three outings at Ripken Stadium. Right-hander Lucas Long is due to be activated for the start in Game Two, Long, the 24th-round draft choice of the Orioles this year, went 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA over six outings with the GCL Orioles before joining the IronBirds.
-SPIKE MARKS: The Spikes are the highest-scoring team in the NYPL with 251 runs in 45 games, an average of 5.58 runs per game..Alex De Leon is leading the NYPL in runs scored with 33, one more than Hudson Valley's Hunter Lockwood...De Leon's 7 homers are tied for fourth in the league...Brian O'Keefe is tied for the league lead in times hit by pitch with nine...Kyle Grana's 13.68 strikeouts per nine innings are third-most among NYPL relievers, and his 39 strikeouts are fourth in the loop...2006 Spikes catcher/DH Scott Thomas returns to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight as the hitting coach for the IronBirds...Thomas played 39 games for the Spikes that year, 19 of them behind the plate
