Lowell Spinners News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Lowell Spinners tied a season-high with 11 runs on 17 hits and that was more than enough for Heri Quevedo, who threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Spinners to an impressive 11-4 win over the Staten Island Yankees Thursday night at Richmond County Ballpark.
The loss snapped the Spinners four-game losing streak.
Lowell (20-27) jumped out to a first inning lead after Danny Mars led off the inning with a double. After a Bryan Hudson single, Bryce Brentz, who joined the Spinners on rehab assignment Thursday morning, brought home Mars on a sacrifice fly.
The Spinners would add to the lead in the second inning, plating a run on an Alixon Suarez RBI triple, expanding the lead to 4-0 with a pair of third inning runs. With two outs, Staten Island (23-24) made a pair of miscues that scored a run and left Sam Travis at third. One batter later Jordan Betts doubled to left, scoring Travis and pushing Lowell ahead, 4-0.
After a scoreless fourth, Lowell would add another pair of runs in the fifth on Betts's seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot, extending the Spinners' lead to 6-0.
Lowell would plate another run in the seventh on a Mauricio Dubon RBI single and pushed the lead to double digits with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by Travis.
Quevedo left after seven sterling innings, Mario Alcantara ran into trouble in the eighth. After walking the first three batters of the inning, Alcantara allowed an RBI single and was removed for Enfember Martinez. Martinez allowed two of the three inherited runners to score, but got out of the inning with the Spinners ahead, 10-3. A Suarez home run in the top of the ninth pushed the lead back to 11-3 and while the Yankees pushed across another run in the ninth, the Spinners cruised to an 11-4 win.
Quevedo (5-3, 7.69) was victorious for the fourth straight time, allowing just four hits while walking one over seven innings. He struck out six. Alcantara did not retire a batter and was charged with three runs, while Martinez allowed one run on one hit and two walks, striking out one over the last two innings.
Travis continued his torrid streak, driving in a run for the sixth straight game as part of a 3-for-5 night. The second round pick from Indiana is now 12-for-18 over his last four games. After back-to-back hitless nights for the first time in his career, Mars had three hits, while Suarez added three hits himself, highlighted by his first home run. Betts led the way with three RBI, as every Spinners starter recorded at least one-hit.
The two teams conclude the three-game series Friday night when Reed Reilly (0-1, 5.11) gets the ball for the 7pm first pitch.
