State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes came back from a two-run deficit to tie the game in the next-to-last inning, but the Aberdeen IronBirds scored in the final frame to grab a 3-2 win in the first seven-inning contest of a doubleheader on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

State College (31-15) trailed, 2-0, going into the sixth, but got two-out RBI singles from both Jake Stone and Nick Thompson to knot the game. Thompson was the lone Spike with multiple hits in the game.

Aberdeen (16-29) got back-to-back base hits from Steve Wilkerson and Jay Gonzalez to start the seventh, though, and Alex Murphy's sacrifice fly gave the IronBirds a lead they would not relinquish.

Spikes reliever Brandon Lee (1-1) took the loss in his second appearance with the club. Lee, who earned the win on Sunday in Mahoning Valley, took the loss after yielding the go-ahead run in his only inning of work.

Will Anderson started and went six innings on the mound for State College. Anderson gave up two runs, one of them earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out four.

Derrick Bleeker (0-2) got the win in relief for Aberdeen, despite allowing the Spikes' tying runs in the sixth. Bleeker logged two innings in which he gave up a total of three hits and a hit batsman while striking out two batters.

IronBirds starter Tanner Chleborad tossed five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out one.

Each team recorded three double plays on the game, all on groundballs.
