Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Mason Davis led off the game with a home run and that would be all the runs that Batavia would need as three Muckdog relievers combined on a five-hit shutout of the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.
Davis lined a 3-1 pitch from Vermont starter Corey Miller over the rightfield fence for his third home run of the season and the Muckdogs added another run in the second on a Luis Alberto Sanz RBI single to right. Miller (0-3) allowed the two runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss, while the Lake Monsters bullpen gave up one unearned run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings. Vermont relievers have not allowed an earned run in their last 12 1/3 innings.
Batavia starter Jorgan Cavanerio (2-4), who entered the game with a 6.34 ERA and a league-leading 65 hits allowed in his first eight starts, allowed just four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. He faced the minimum 15 batters over the first five innings, the only baserunners being a Yairo Munoz leadoff single in first (caught stealing) and Seong-min Kim leadoff single in third (erased on a double play).
Vermont's best chance to score a run came in the fifth on back-to-back one-out singles from John Nogowski, but Munoz lined into an inning-ending double play. James Buckelew followed Cavanerio with a perfect eighth inning and Juancito Martinez allowed just a two-out Brett Vertigan single in the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. Davis and Sanz both finished with two hits on the night for Batavia (23-24).
Munoz's first-inning single extended his hitting streak to 12 games, while Jose Brizuela was 0-for-3 and had his 10-game hitting streak snapped. Vertigan's ninth-inning single was his 32nd hit of the season and his 100th career hit for Vermont (had 68 hits for Lake Monsters in 2012). He is the eighth player all-time with at least 100 career hits for Vermont (17-30), which was shutout for the fourth time this season.
Vermont and Batavia will wrap up the three-game series on Friday starting at 7:05 pm. It is the annual "Summer of Love" at the ballpark and the first 500 fans will receive a free tie-dye basebal courtesy of Ben & Jerry's.
